  1. Short:    Porticus, Gazebo, Umbrella - The Shelter Family of FrontEnds

  6.     The  Shelter  Family  is  a  set  of  powerful  and easily configurable
  7. WPL-based  Mailers  which  adhere  to the WSC standards.  Three independant
  8. mailers  are  available in the Shelter Family of Mailers:  Umbrella, Gazebo
  9. and  Porticus.   Each  can  be  configured  and  compiled with the included
  10. GenMailer program.
  11.  
  12.     The 1.91 SHELTER release archive replaces all previous PORTICUS, GAZEBO
  13. and UMBRELLA releases and diff update archives.  The separate archives have
  14. been  dispensed for a number of reasons; it reduces nightly archive load on
  15. my system, total size of the SHELTER archive is not much larger than any of
  16. the  separate  ones,  and  AmiNet  Administration has indicated a desire to
  17. reduce  the number of files appearing in the RECENT listing.  The change in
  18. the distribution format of SHELTER should help them achieve their goal.
  19.  
  20.     Future SHELTER diff update archives will be based upon this release.
  21.   (See Distribution:  section below)
  22.  
  23.     The  1.91  release of Xpack is not included in the SHELTER archive, but
  24. is  available  separately  in  comm/fido.   Both  RFS  and the new RFH freq
  25. handlers  are  included  in  the  Shelter  distribution  as  well  as being
  26. available in rfs191.lha.
  27.  
  28.   Each  Shelter  Mailer  has  a subset of the features of the powerful Roof
  29. Mailer,  which  has  served as the development testbed for all wpl mailers,
  30. for certain XPR's and utilities and for the RexxMsg and WPLRX interfaces as
  31. well  as  the WPL language itself.  Although the Roof Mailer is included in
  32. the  distribution,  it  is  an  intregal  part  of the HUGE Roof System and
  33. requires  the  ROOFLOG and FLOWMGR function hosts for proper operation.  It
  34. is provided as a configuration example only.
  35.  
  36.   If  you  are  looking  for a Point Mailer, and find that Umbrella is more
  37. than  you  need,  I  recommend one of the Melody Mailers:  POP, JAZ or RAP.
  38. These  Point-Only mailers are the smallest and fastest available.  They are
  39. available on AmiNet or by FREQ using the magic names:
  40.     POP, JAZ and RAP from either:
  41.     fidonet#1:167/104.0   or
  42.     fidonet#1:167/151.0.
  43.  
  44.  
  45.     The Uncommon Features of Shelter Mailers
  46.     ----------------------------------------
  47.   All  Shelter  Mailers  feature a Mailer Status Display, scrolling log and
  48. progress  windows  as  well  as  an  XPR  progress  window.   In  addition,
  49. individual  windows  can  display  the  progress  of  each poll.  All these
  50. windows,  except  for the Display, may be enabled or disabled during mailer
  51. generation.
  52.  
  53.   All  Shelter  Mailers feature SeaLink (inbound), DietIFNA, ZedZap, ZedZip
  54. and  DirectZap  (library  version dependant) protocols with crash-resistant
  55. RESUME  and  support  for  both  2d  and  4d  outgoing  file requests.  XPR
  56. protocols  are  used  thoughout.  FTS1, Wazoo, EMSI and UUCP handshakes are
  57. supported.
  58.  
  59.   Shelter  mailers provide a high level of security, both when dealing with
  60. other mailers and with human callers.  Unlike other mailers, when a Shelter
  61. Mailer  is  properly  configured,  if  is  very  unlikely that files can be
  62. stolen, or your HD formatted.
  63.  
  64.   Multiple AFTERSESSION and WHENRECD commands allow automatic req, mail and
  65. tic processing.  Unlike any other mailers, Shelter Mailers provide separate
  66. commands  per file type to be executed either when a file of a certain type
  67. is  received/sent  or  after  the  session  or BOTH.  The Cache also allows
  68. Site-specific  AFTERSESSION  commands to override the GLOBAL ones.  Example
  69. aftersession  command  scripts  include  utilities to set the filenote of a
  70. received  file  from  the description comment in the sent REQ file, or from
  71. the short description in an AmiNet .README file.
  72.   Shelter  Mailers  also  permit both PREDIAL and PRESESS commands if one's
  73. application requires even more control.
  74.   The  usefulness  of the above features is indicated by the fact that they
  75. have now found their way into other mailers under various guises.
  76.  
  77.  
  78.   All  Shelter  Mailers  are  multi-FTN  and  feature both EMSI and AUTOAKA
  79. WAZOO.   AutoAKA  causes  the  mailer's primary address to be set depending
  80. upon the address of the site being called or who is calling.  The domain is
  81. automatically  set if the remote site does not provide it.  When USEAKAS is
  82. set  for  FTN  site, all files for all AKAs configured for the site will be
  83. sent  in  the  same  session  both  under WAZOO and EMSI.  The Shelter EMSI
  84. implemenation  is  the  most  extensive available on the Amiga and has been
  85. proposed in NET_DEV as the basis for extensions to the EMSI specification.
  86.  
  87.   All  Shelter  Mailers feature a Site Cache, which allows setting a remote
  88. site's session password, sitename, sysopname, phone number, alternate phone
  89. number.   The  remote site may be an FTN node, a UUCP site, an Atomic Clock
  90. site  or  a  BBS, FTP or Online Service ( in which case the configured term
  91. program  will  be  spawned upon connect).  Other parameters specific to the
  92. type  of  site may also be set.  If your tosser is not domain-aware and the
  93. site  sends  archives containing bundles for multiple FTNs, the site may be
  94. configured so that these bundles will be sorted by domain for tossing.  One
  95. may also configure a particular site so that all mail is sent to configured
  96. AKAs  of  a  site  either  on  inbound,  outbound or both.  On can also set
  97. handshake  (FTS1,WAZOO,EMSI,FAST) to use when calling and what addresses to
  98. present  under  EMSI  when  dialing a site.  The Cache allows Site-specific
  99. AFTERSESSION commands of the various types to override the GLOBAL ones.
  100.  
  101.   In  addition  to  the  Site  Cache,  the Gazebo and Porticus Mailers also
  102. support  either  nodelist.library  or traplist.library for FTN sessions and
  103. the uucp Passwd and L.sys configs for uucp sessions.
  104.  
  105.   The  Shelter  Mailer  Manager  program allows Cache and Manual dialing as
  106. well as an AUTO feature which allows auto-startup and poll of one's BOSS or
  107. echo  hub.   With  Manual dialing, one just specifies site and phone number
  108. and/or   line  to  use.   Also  included  is  a  POLL  feature  which  will
  109. asyncronously  poll all sites with pending mail.  POLLs will continue until
  110. a  connection is made, with the number of seconds between dial attempts and
  111. the duration of a poll window both being configurable.
  112.  
  113.   Remote  addresses  can  be simply specified, with address expansion being
  114. done  based  upon your AKA in the domain being called.  For example, if one
  115. wanted  to  call  fidonet#1:167/104.0,  and  one's  own  primary address is
  116. fidonet#1:167/151.0, one would simply do:
  117.             Shelter CALL 104
  118.  
  119.   One  can  enable  individual  windows  for  each poll in progress to keep
  120. abreast  of  the  current  status.   A  poll  can  be aborted via a Shelter
  121. command,  or  a Ctl-C in the poll's window.  Parameters such as duration of
  122. poll attempt, redial and busy delays are settable on the fly.
  123.  
  124.   Shelter  mailers  do not use the obsolete and non-secure FLO file format,
  125. but rather the very secure Xferq.library outbound management.  However, all
  126. Shelter  Mailers  do provide functions to convert 4D .FLO files to 5D XferQ
  127. queues  and  to  add any type of file to a site queue.  In addition, a VERY
  128. comprehensive  set  of Queue management tools is available as xpack191.lha.
  129. The author of the Shelter Mailers is also maintaining xferq.library and has
  130. released an update, including source, XQUPD1_9.LHA.
  131.  
  132.   Shelter Mailers also provide for multiple inbound directories for Tossers
  133. which are not domain aware, as well as a NONSECURE inbound for sites not in
  134. Site  Cache  or nodelist.  A separate inbound is provided for HUMAN callers
  135. with Porticus.
  136.  
  137.   GenMailer,  the  Mailer  generator,  uses  standard AmigaDos command line
  138. templates.   Both  command line switches and internal options provide extra
  139. control  in special situations.  A multiple output module format is used so
  140. that  one  can reconfigure and reload parts of the mailer, such as the site
  141. cache,  menus or config, instead of recompiling the whole thing.  Utilities
  142. are  also  provided for changing certain parameters (SCTL) and various menu
  143. options (SEDIT) at any time.
  144.  
  145.   Porticus and Gazebo have been successfully used with the following BBS's:
  146. DLG, Excelsior, Cnet, TransAmiga, Falcon, Contact!
  147.  
  148.     Umbrella Point Mailer
  149.     ---------------------
  150.   The  Umbrella Point Mailer is a single line, multi-FTN mailer.  It can be
  151. setup  to  answer the phone, BBS spawning is not supported however.  If set
  152. to  noanswer,  the  answer  code  is  not  generated.  This mailer does not
  153. require  a nodelist, as it features both the Site Cache and manual dialing.
  154. It  does  not support UUCP, CLOCK, FAX or BBS dialing, nor spawning of file
  155. request handlers or BBSs.  It can be set to not do flo convert but to queue
  156. flo files only when connected, thereby reducing memory usage.

  158.  
  159.     Gazebo - The Standard Node Mailer
  160.     ---------------------------------
  161.   In  addition  to  the standard Shelter FTN features, Gazebo allows single
  162. BBS  spawning, UUCP inbound and outbound calls and setting the system clock
  163. via calls to any Atomic Clock Site with XPRclock.library.  It also features
  164. XfreqSH,  which  allows  the use of ANY File Request Handler except RFS and
  165. RFH.
  166.  
  167.  
  168.     Porticus - Full Service FrontEnd
  169.     --------------------------------
  170.   Porticus has all the features of the Umbrella and Gazebo Mailers, as well
  171. as all the non-ROOF System dependant features of the ROOF Mailer.  Porticus
  172. uses  either or  both the mailer-only RFH file request functionhost and the
  173. RFS File Request Handler (both included) which provides file requests, both
  174. standard and HRF format update requests, response handling and accounts for
  175. both mailers and human callers.
  176.  
  177.   Porticus  is  the only wpl mailer featuring a WPLRX interface that allows
  178. the user to add additional capabilities.  Many examples are provided.
  179.  
  180.   In  addition  to  the  extensive  mailer  capabilities  described  above,
  181. Porticus has a full-featured remote user interface for Human callers.  This
  182. interface provides functions approaching those of a BBS:

  186.             Multiple BBSs and/or Remote Shell selections
  187.             Remote on-line help
  188.             Text Information displays
  189.             Doors including games and utilities
  190.             Auto-Download of Magic Names

  193.             Messages to/from sysop
  194.             Message Base scroller
  195.             File Base Browser with command stacking
  196.             File Requests with CallBack Verification (with reward)
  197.             Automatic FileRequests
  198.             Forwarded File requests (to/from OTHER systems)
  199.             Passworded Remote CLI
  200.             Amiga Empire Game support
  201.             User Accounts
  202.             Boot a human caller
  203.  
  204.     All these utilities are included in the distribution.
